Heralding a new era

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’s proposals, presented yesterday, for a constitutional review represent a radical response to demands from Greek citizens for a complete overhaul of the country’s political system.

What Samaras presented was the basis for a transition into a new political era. Of course there will be those who disagree with parts of the proposal, such as the suggestion that the president should be elected by the people rather than political parties, which, they will argue, could cause turmoil.

But the greater part of his proposal suggests changes that are absolutely necessary for Greece to acquire functional institutions and be freed from the numerous obstacles that have held it back. This proposal needs to be backed by the rest of the political establishment, and especially the veterans who know just how important a review of the Constitution is.

This is an opportunity that should not be allowed to go to waste.
