‘Quick buck’ damage
There are a number of reasons why the Greek tourism sector is doing particularly well these days.
Greece has become a highly competitive holiday destination with regard to its prices, while at the same time there are a number of countries in the broader region which are currently in turmoil.
Nevertheless, certain phenomena currently being observed could potentially harm the country’s image and have long-term side effects.
There are some local hotel establishments and restaurants that have raised their prices to a very high degree without this being justified by any corresponding upgrade in the services they offer their international clientele.
It would be a major mistake for the Greek tourism sector to treat this year’s rise in terms of visitors – a record number of 19 million travelers are expected this summer – as an opportunity for professionals to profit from the situation and aim for a quick buck.
In this case, the damage done would be immeasurable.
