Unchecked development

Fresh legislation regarding the development of a new zoning plan, a bill approved by Greek Parliament on Thursday, may lead to a series of potentially very serious and harmful situations.

Putting an end to restrictions regarding development in areas that had so far been classified as strictly residential will most certainly pave the way for unchecked construction.

There are those who argue that this will not happen in practice as municipal authorities will not allow such unchecked activity to take place.

Nevertheless, judging from past experience, no one can expect local government to contain whatever wave of irregular construction might arise, whether due to ongoing corruption or because of a general lack of efficiency.

The very fact that this particular bill was presented to parliamentary deputies in a rather unexpected manner, without thorough prior research and subsequent debate in the House, undoubtedly raises a number of questions.
