Between two evils

No reasonable citizen wants to be in a position of having to choose between the vulgar and the irresponsible.

Regrettably, this is more or less how Greek voters feel these days. On the one hand there is the established political system, which has ruled the country for decades and which continues to appoint its political acolytes to key positions in the state apparatus. In one breath these politicians propose changes to the country’s Constitution so that deputies cannot at the same time be appointed as ministers and, in the other, they entrust the most parochial deputies with crucial portfolios.

For its part, leftist opposition SYRIZA embraces every bankrupt politician on the sole basis of their anti-bailout credentials. But SYRIZA’s lavish pledges, its endless scandal allegations and blatant inexperience are putting voters off.

People want stability and they can read the signs of economic recovery. But they are also anxious to see whether the political system can leave its bad habits behind. People’s patience is running extremely thin.
