Battling the flames
The first – and hopefully last – major fire of the current summer season reportedly burnt about 500 hectares in Keratea, southern Attica, over the weekend, and there are strong indications to support the theory that the blaze was the result of arson.
While it was obvious that major efforts were made by authorities in order to put out the fire, what is also true is that the environmental damage caused by the blaze was, once again, of considerable scope.
Recommending increased vigilance by local authorities and more care by members of the public seems rather unnecessary at this stage.
The point is that in a country like Greece, where summertime fires have become an endemic phenomenon, rudimentary measures to combat blazes must always be in place.
When it comes to fires, praying and offering advice after the fact is never enough.
