Capital changes
A sizable part of the middle of the Greek capital has been slated to receive a significant makeover with the implementation of an urban restructuring project which includes turning a key city center thoroughfare, Panepistimiou Street, into a pedestrian-only, vehicle-free zone.
This is without doubt the kind of venture that could very well trigger the beginning of a much-needed period of growth for this part of Athens.
At the same time, however, the project is bound to lead also to a series of radical changes when it comes to the Greek capital’s traffic map.
It appears that neither the City of Athens, nor any other authority for that matter, has taken the time to explore the possible effects of such a public works project to any considerable degree.
It is hard to imagine that a city the size of Athens is currently undergoing a major revamp without any adequate study or rudimentary public dialogue.
