Decisiveness and prudence

Greece must move with decisiveness but also prudence as far as its relations with Turkey are concerned.

There are always those who want to use various methods to provoke a crisis, for reasons that only they can truly know.

The country paid for this kind of behavior during the Imia crisis in 1996, when Greece and Turkey came very close to going to war over a dispute surrounding an uninhabited rocky outcrop in the Aegean. Then, sensationalism and exaggeration contributed to the situation escalating.

Greece will defend its national interest, while it is also clear that it has no option but to foster a national understanding and common position. It is vital, though, that no action should be taken if the next step is not clear and has not already been decided.

We need calm, planning and, of course, clear goals.
