OPINION

Expensive load of old rubbish

Greece will be called on to pay an exorbitant amount in fines as a result of its failure to deal with the crucial issue of waste management over the last few decades.

Somehow the country has managed to get involved in a never-ending string of discussions over a relatively straightforward matter which has a number of obvious solutions. However, amazingly, these discussions never seem to lead to anything constructive.

In the meantime, a few small but effective landfill “mafias” have been allowed to carry on operating without any oversight whatsoever by the state.

It is nothing short of shameful for Greece to maintain this image of an underdeveloped country in 2014.

It is high time that regional governors currently in charge finally set their ideological and other priorities aside and solved this pivotal matter once and for all.
