The crucial voters

There are forces inside and outside the country that would like to see Greece collapse. Outside, there are certain international players who are testing the tolerance of Greece’s society and political system. Maybe they want to be proven right for saying that Greece does not belong in the eurozone. Within Greece, the powers of extreme populism and hate seem to be gaining the upper hand.

Trapped in the middle is a society that has suffered hardship but is beginning to see timid signs of improvement in the economy. It understands that the government has lost its reform momentum because of the political cost. On the other hand, it sees an opposition that has no plan other than to dismantle anything that has been achieved so far.

Where are these citizens to turn?

The prime minister has one last desperate chance to win them back. If he addresses them clearly and honestly, and if he promises radical changes within the government ranks, he may well succeed.
