All talk, no action?

“Society is changing, and we must change with it,» Michalis Chrysochoidis, PASOK’s general secretary, said in Thessaloniki. But it remains unclear what the content of these «changes» will be and indeed what the party means by «change.» «PASOK must break from longstanding opinions and reasoning,» Transport Minister Christos Verelis said. But it would be useful if he could determine which specific established opinions of our times he believes his party should abandon. Not least because many of these opinions have been generated within the ruling party. PASOK «will change both its content and its packaging,» Public Order Minister Giorgos Floridis told the Vima daily. The only problem is that the content and the trappings have long become one and cannot be separated. Far from original was the appeal by Defense Minister Yiannos Papantoniou in Sunday’s Eleftherotypia for PASOK to «broaden its catchment area – to the left and the right» with «certain individuals» from the «middle ground,» the «center right,» the «democratic Left,» and «especially the Synaspismos Left Coalition.» Most remarkable, however, was Economy Minister Nikos Christodoulakis, who told Flash Radio that «development has already been consolidated» in our country. So, the major problem has been solved and now the government is dealing with secondary issues…
