WE THANK AMERICA: Yesterday morning was the launch of a conference of «Friends of America» in Parliament House, which was dedicated to the expression of Greece’s thanks to the American people. Present at the ceremony, whose honorary chairman was the Parliament’s deputy speaker, Mr Triantafyllis, were Archbishop Spyridon of Athens, who read a message of thanks from the Greek people to the USA, many government ministers, Attica prefect Mr G. Georgiadis, the mayors of Athens and Piraeus and representatives of all professional and cultural organizations. Speakers included the president of the Athens Academy, Mr Kougeas, the president of the Hellenic American Educational Institute, Mr P. Anagnostopoulos, the parliamentary deputy for Cephalonia, Mr G. Livadas, and Dr Weld on behalf of the US ambassador, who expressed his thanks for the Greek people’s warm feelings toward his country. Notes of thanks to the American people were then read out on behalf of mayors and other officials and the ceremony ended in a rousing round of applause for the USA.
