Learning the lesson

The changes the government is trying to introduce in the education sector are regressive and are pushing Greece out of the European framework.

It took great effort and broad consensus to reverse the big mistakes that were made in the 1980s. We must not allow the blinkered ideology of those who are governing us now to take us backward.

Education is something we should all take an interest in, not only the student union chiefs who want to protect their little fiefdoms. We need excellence, competition and unfettered universities if we want to see Greece growing again and being a fully fledged member of the European Union.

A gathering organized yesterday by students and academics to protest the changes planned by the government was a good start and will hopefully continue without politicians trying to capitalize on these efforts. After all, few politicians really believed in and fought for education reforms over the years.
