Crucial decisions
Responsibility for the big decisions that will shape the future of this country comes down to individuals and not the nation.
As Greece’s prime minister, Alexis Tsipras bears responsibility for the country’s ongoing negotiations with its international creditors, regardless of the outcome, and it is Tsipras who has to weigh the interests of the nation against the perils of a collapse in talks.
Of course it would be advisable for the prime minister to request a meeting of the council of party leaders which is summoned at times of emergency. Bilateral talks with individual political leaders carry little institutional weight, and future historians will not take them into serious account.
Faced with the prospect of default and a euro exit, Greece is entering a crucial period when every single statement and every single decision will be of historic significance.
