Doing the right thing
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his former finance chief Yanis Varoufakis gambled with the country’s future as if they were playing a game of craps. And they lost. The truth came out as all the leaders of the European Union made it clear, as one, that either Greece signs a bailout deal on Sunday or it will be kicked out of the eurozone.
So far, Tsipras has done everything in his power to veil the real dilemma but this is no longer possible.
He has two choices. One is to ignore the extreme voices in his party and take the leap dictated by his patriotic duty. The other is to form a unity government that will share the burden of a new bailout so he has the support he needs to implement new measures and save the country.
If he does not pursue one of these two options, it will become clear that a Grexit was his plan all along. If this is the case, he will be held solely responsible for the tragedy that follows.
If, on the other hand, he takes the responsible path, he will have everyone’s support. Hopefully, he will do what’s right.
