OPINION

A brave step forward

In the early hours, Parliament approved, with a large majority, the agreement with our European partners that secures Greece’s stay in the eurozone and avoids catastrophe. The responsible opposition parties took on the burden that pertained to them without shirking.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras undertook the responsibility for the country’s salvation, albeit at the very last moment. We have to acknowledge this. But he lost the backing of a significant part of his own party’s parliamentary group.

In the debate, Tsipras did not work toward unifying the political parties, toward being conciliatory with the opposition. From now, he has no other course than to work toward consensus and coooperation with the political parties that support our country’s remaining in the euro.

Tsipras also has a responsibility to make certain that from today the country will have a government that will honor the Greek state’s commitments and implement them. If he does not do this, Tsipras’s brave step will remain suspended in mid-air. And with it, our country’s future in Europe.
