RALLY PARTY VICTORY: Despite the bad weather, during the by-election on Sunday (January 24) in Thessaloniki and Drama to fill two parliamentary seats (…) Mr Mikes Mavrogordatos, of the Greek Rally party (the party of the prime minister, Field Marshal Alexandros Papagos) won in Thessaloniki and Mr K. Lambrianidis in Drama. The by-elections were the eighth and ninth since the general elections held on November 16, 1952. The Greek Rally party also won in the previous seven by-elections. ZORAS AND BOUBOULIDIS: New book: «Poets of the Ionian Islands Prior to Dionysis Solomos,» by G.T. Zoras and F.K. Bouboulidis, Athens University Workshop of Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology, Athens, 1953. FRAUD: Another person has fallen victim to a water seller. Maria K. Theofylatou lodged a complaint at her local police station that a person who appeared at her home at 14 Avydou Street sold her a can of oil for 150,000 drachmas. The can was found to contain only water. (Ed. note: This was then a frequent occurrence, when customers were sold cans of water on which a little oil had been poured. The practice was satirized in a popular film of the time.)
