Weakening bond

Completely disparate political forces have been brought together by their shared anti-memorandum fervor. The present coalition government of leftist SYRIZA and nationalist Independent Greeks is the epitome of such bizarre unions. But today, the glue that binds the two is not the struggle against austerity but a passion for power. This bond, however, is inevitably being tested by issues that find the two sides very far apart.

One of the most recent examples is the furor that arose after the controversial comments of SYRIZA Education Minister Nikos Filis in regard to the genocide of Black Sea, or Pontic, Greeks.

The need to implement the new memorandum, meanwhile, brought the government crashing down to reality and there are some very painful decisions that will need to be taken in the months to come, which will test the unity of this opportunistic alliance.
