Engagement pays off

Because of the lack of solid leadership and of any meaningful prospects in this part of the world, a certain degree of disaffection with political developments and public life is to be expected.

That said, nothing will change if we decide to remain angry and inactive. Quite the opposite in fact. Our lack of engagement will only result in strengthening the hand of fanatics and vested interests which are at odds with due political process.

For these reasons it is crucial that we shed our complacency, get off the couch and seek to actively participate in the political process in order to affect developments.

In that respect, any citizens who understand the need for a strong opposition party did well to overcome their reluctance and inhibitions by voting in yesterday’s elections for a new conservative leader.

It is imperative that we renew the nation’s political system. Until Greece is given a chance at rebirth, we need to protect the few remaining pillars of stability.
