The EU’s ‘soft power’

The situation currently unfolding in Turkey with regard to serious restrictions in the freedom of the press in the neighboring country should not go unnoticed by the leaders of the countries forming the European Union.

After all, the EU is an association of states whose very idea of “soft power” is based on the notion of safeguarding such fundamental liberties.

It is wrong for such serious issues to be ignored by member-states, because, in doing so, they are sending out the wrong message to the administration of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

On the whole, the leadership of Europe is currently giving the impression that it is being led by Ankara.

This is a fact which will eventually lead to negative consequences with regard to the interests of Europe and the European Union’s overall image.
