END OF McCARTHYISM: Washington, 3 – At his daily press conference, US President Dwight Eisenhower gave a good lesson in democratic methods that should be used to wipe out Communism, criticizing the methods used for that purpose by Senator McCarthy, which he said «were not compatible with the sentiments of the American people regarding justice and the proper treatment of citizens.» POVERTY IN GREECE: The Welfare Ministry has announced that during the last quarter of 1953, those people characterized as being below the poverty line numbered 2,420,535 in a total population of 7,916,831. Of these, those with a monthly income of under 120,000 drachmas numbered 1,793,545. The largest number of poor people are in the prefectures of Kozani (84 percent of the total population there), Evrytania (78.9 percent), Preveza (76.1 percent), Ioannina (66.8 percent), Karditsa (62.7 percent) and Lefkada (51.4 percent). The number of poor people rose from July to September 1953 by 60,838.
