Respect for justice
It is urgent and abosolutely necessary that calm is restored in Greece’s judicial system in the wake of recent developments.
The judiciary is not just a part of the state apparatus. It is, in fact, no less than one of the three pillars that support the nation’s democratic system.
Mao Tse-tung, the founder of modern China, has been quoted as saying that “there is great chaos under heaven – the situation is excellent.” The famous phrase has often been borrowed by Alexis Tsipras, Greece’s leftist prime minister. However, applying this line of thinking to the justice system is unthinkable.
There are certain conditions if the power in question can operate as stipulated by the Constitution. These conditions are independence, level-headedness and discernment, always in line with the laws and legal procedure.
Making sure all these are in place is the only way to secure and protect the rule of law and citizens’ respect for justice.
