Between two worlds
Greece is part of the West and the First World. The country’s place in the world was decided by the people many decades ago.
Sure, we have come close to severing ties with the rest of Europe and the West often in our history, and risked squandering our First World status. If this was averted, it was thanks to our survival instinct.
It was this instinct of self-preservation that saved us when certain political forces sought to drag us in the wrong direction in the summer of 2015.
The presence and the speech by Greece’s left-wing prime minister, Alexis Tsipras, in Cuba during events to mark the death of Fidel Castro suggest that many in our political system still have no idea of where they stand. They deem it appropriate to identify with Third World symbols at a time when the country is striving to maintain a Western way of life.
The whole attitude would simply be pathetic were the country not faced with so many open fronts.
