Risk of real exposure

Greeks say that when you mess with the chicken feed, you risk being pecked to death. The government has obviously ignored this nugget of folk wisdom, as its efforts to control the media landscape has got it embroiled in situations that smell very fishy indeed.

This is neither the first nor the last government that will have been held hostage to powerful and not always healthy business interests – wheeling and dealing always comes at a price, and sometimes it’s a very high one.

Playing by the rules and protecting healthy competition may be painful to the government and strip it of the false sense of security it gets from its backroom deals with major players, but it is the only real protection it can have against serious exposure to danger.
