Permanent solution needed

April’s tourism figures were more than encouraging as they showed that arrivals and revenues were on the rise, providing a vital boost to the country’s struggling economy. But it appears we Greeks just can’t get our self-destructive streak under control.

With the summer tourism season just getting started, Greece is confronted with the problem of municipal contract workers and the resulting garbage collectors’ strike, which has led, once again, to growing heaps of trash on the streets of Athens, and in the heart of the tourist district no less.

This recurring problem of garbage piling on the capital’s streets has burdened the country for decades, and no one has dared to grab the bull by its horns and come up with a permanent solution.
