Electoral reform

All signs suggest that the government is determined to establish a system of simple proportional representation for the next local elections – despite objections by the majority of the country’s mayors, as expressed in a poll conducted earlier this year.

Reaching decisions at a municipal level is already hard, even when these concern small issues. However, if the majority were held hostage by the minority, which is what would happen with the simple representational system, it would become impossible.

There is obviously something else at play behind the government’s insistence – and this is certainly not a desire to simplify the democratic process.
