KARAMANLIS ON THE WAY UP: Thessaloniki, 6 – In the presence of the public order minister, Mr Constantine Karamanlis, the reconstruction of Vassileos Georgiou-Vassilissis Olgas Avenue began today. This road, from which tramlines are already being removed, will reopen to traffic by the end of September. Mr Karamanlis then reviewed work along the coast on a new avenue similar to that between Athens-Eden-Glyfada. Accompanied by engineers and senior ministry staff, he later reviewed the construction of the Axios and Aliakmonos dams and visited the towns of Veria and Naoussa. In the evening, Mr Karamanlis met with engineers and contractors undertaking roadworks within the city of Thessaloniki, urging them to keep to their deadlines so that the roads can open to traffic as soon as possible. GEORGIOS I. RALLIS: Minister to the Prime Minister Mr Georgios Rallis spoke by telephone to the Greek ambassador in Washington, Mr Politis, who told him that the films of the earthquake destruction in Thessaly had been shown on television and in cinemas around the US.
