EMIGRATION: The Italian steamship Castel Verde set sail from Piraeus yesterday for Australia with 438 Greek emigrants on board, many of whom were traveling with their families. In Port Said, Egypt, another 14 Greeks will embark. HALANDRI STRAWBERRIES: During the last week the food markets were sufficiently stocked with fresh fish, particularly lobsters, prawns, mullet and other fish. There was less domestic meat, however, particularly top-quality veal, which was selling for as much as 40 drachmas per oka (1.2 kilos) and lamb, which was selling for 36-38 drachmas per oka. There was also plenty of poultry and other basic foodstuffs. As for seasonal fruits, despite the continuing bad weather, cherries appeared on the market for 15 drachmas per oka and Halandri strawberries for 40 drachmas. Vegetables, cabbages, cucumbers and tomatoes were selling for 32 drachmas per oka. (Ed. note: the price of a newspaper was 1.50 drachmas). RAIL STOCK: The Greek State Railways has reduced by 25 percent the fees for transporting livestock in order to facilitate the move to their summer pastures.
