AMERICAN AID: The prime minister, Field Marshal Alexandros Papagos, yesterday made the following announcement in Trikala, Corinthia, where he is on holiday: «During a visit to Trikala, Corinthia, yesterday, US Ambassador Cavendish Cannon informed me that the United States government, after a careful study of a memorandum I had submitted, and in recognition of the Greek government’s strong support of the allied defense effort, has decided to provide additional aid to the Greek government to enable it to maintain its armed forces at a level adequate for the demands of the North Atlantic Alliance (…).» As for the amount of the additional aid, no announcement was made. SCRAP COLLECTORS: (From the column «An Athenian’s Notes»): Recently I was watching a scrap picker at work. Naturally it requires great patience and desperation to sift through rubbish on the street and in municipal garbage dumpsters to earn a living. The empty cigarette packet, the chocolate wrapper, a torn envelope, every piece of scrap paper will together make up over a kilo, which is not enough for a bun. Yet by this trade, one’s bread is earned.
