CYPRIOT STRUGGLE: (From a commentary in Kathimerini): Contacts made by Archbishop Makarios of Cyprus on the sidelines of the Bantung conference were not fruitless. Delegates from Afro-Asian states were briefed on the true nature and significance of the Cyprus issue. The question of self-determination was included in the conference communique in a general way, but in a way that left no margin for doubt. In private talks with Makarios, representatives of states that are members of the UN undertook the moral obligation to give their firm support for the Cypriot people’s demands and to co-sign a new appeal by the Greek government. The ethnarch’s presence at the conference brought considerable benefits to the Cyprus cause. COMMUNIST PARTY AND EOKA: (From a commentary in Kathimerini): (Communist Party of Greece leader Nikos) Zachariadis has likened the intensification of the Cypriot struggle to «Easter fireworks» and the Greek seamen who have been arrested as «hirelings» of the British. In general, he sees the events on the island as «directed by the imperialists.» The KKE leader calls on the Greeks to work together with the Turks.
