NOVAS-MYRIVILIS 21-10: The Athens Academy met yesterday evening to vote to fill a post in the literature department. Candidate Georgios Athanassiadis Novas received 21 votes and Stratis Myrivilis received 10. There were four blank votes. The Academy also discussed filling the second vacant seat in this section. The vote will take place in a week’s time with a single candidate, Mr Myrivilis. GRONCHI ELECTED: Rome, 29 – Mr Giovanni Gronchi was elected president of the Italian Republic, the second successive president in the history of the new Italian Republic. (…) The election of Mr Gronchi, although a member of the Christian Democratics, constitutes a major defeat for the leaders of his party and for the leader of the coalition, Prime Minister Mario Selba. The parties in government were forced to support Mr Gronchi in order to keep him from winning with the votes of the Communists and Socialists. BODOSAKIS: His Majesty King Pavlos has personally presented Mr Bodosakis Athanassiadis with the Order of the Phoenix because right after the war he invested much of his capital in major production enterprises in Greece, making a considerable contribution to the reconstruction of the Greek economy.
