CYPRIOT ‘TERRORISTS’: Nicosia, 15 – According to the local Reuters correspondent «in an extra edition of Cyprus’s Government Gazette,» a law has been published today giving the government increased powers to crush terrorism (meaning the EOKA fighters) in Cyprus. TERRORISM IN CYPRUS: The ethnarch of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, has lodged a strong protest with the United Nations secretary-general regarding the oppressive measures the British government has imposed on Cyprus as of last Saturday (July 16, 1955). The Cypriot ethnarch made the following statement: «(…) The governor, on the pretext of an emergency, has abolished all trace of personal freedoms and is now able to use his authority to make arrests without any evidence and to incarcerate in prisons or concentration camps any resident of the island, without first making any specific charge or to present him before any judicial authority. This is contrary to the basic provisions of human and civil rights, it abolishes habeas corpus and creates a police state of terrorism and violence on the island.»
