TEN DAYS BEFORE THE VANDALISM: (From an editorial in Kathimerini) – «The Turks have deeply disappointed us… Their newspapers have recently been printing a great many ridiculous reports… but the friendship between the two countries can withstand such trials. It would be unjust and extremely harmful for the general cause of peace, however, if the responsible people in government were carried away by the cries of the more hot-blooded and ignored the fundamental importance of the Greek-Turkish alliance.» EVE OF THE VANDALISM: Istanbul, 27 – Another of many falsehoods is being reported in the Turkish press, this one against the Ecumenical Patriarchate… which resulted in the following announcement from the Patriarchate: «The morning press has reported that the Patriarch and the Patriarchate have ordered that a collection be taken up among the Greeks in the city to be sent to Cyprus. This report is completely false and contrary to the feelings of love and devotion which Patriarch Athinagoras and the Greeks here feel for the Turkish government and their beloved country, Turkey.»
