KARAMANLIS HEADS FOR THE PREMIERSHIP: 18 – King Paul’s series of meetings on the political crisis (the illness of the prime minister, Field Marshal Alexandros Papagos) comes to an end tomorrow. Yesterday morning, the king received Minister for Transport and Public Works Mr Constantine Karamanlis for a talk that lasted approximately 50 minutes. No statement was released after the meeting. The king then received the head of the Liberal Party, Mr George Papandreou, who (…) stressed the need to dissolve the current government and form a caretaker government to hold elections at the soonest possible date, under any electoral system. The king then received the parliamentary representative of the EPEK party, Mr Savvas Papapolitis, who called for the immediate dissolution of Parliament. Half an hour later, a representative of the Democratic Party, Mr Alexandros Svolos, claimed that it would be unconstitutional to appoint a transition government or deputy prime minister. CANNON RETURNS: American Ambassador in Athens Cavendish Cannon returned to the capital from his vacation yesterday afternoon and later called on Foreign Minister Mr Stephanos Stephanopoulos for a long talk.
