STEFANOPOULOS – KANELLOPOULOS: After the return from New York early yesterday morning of the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mr Stefanos Stefanopoulos, and following intense political activity by the government yesterday, the political situation (due to the serious illness of the Prime Minister, Field Marshal Alexandros Papagos), appeared to be becoming clearer. Neither the opposition can lay serious claim to the formation of a government nor is the dissolution of Parliament and the calling of elections feasible. Only the Greek Rally party government is able to continue to wield power. The only thing left to clarify in the situation is the shape the government will take. This issue was examined in detail during yesterday’s contacts between Mr Stefanopoulos and Mr Panayiotis Kanellopoulos with the Prime Minister, Field Marshal Alexandros Papagos and then with King Pavlos… At 6 p.m. Mr Stefanopoulos received the US Ambassador in Athens Cavendish Cannon at the ministry. Previously, Messrs Stefanopoulos and Kanellopoulos had a long talk with the Coordination Minister, Mr Panayis Papaligouras.
