Pondering the mortal dilemma of radical Islam

Nikos Konstandaras’s commentary, «Fat Lady on Democracy’s Ladder» (December 5) makes a very good observation: Radical Islam faces a mortal dilemma. Can its characteristic totalitarian rule, which privileges a few and subjugates everyone else, survive contact with freedom? I would like to pose a further question for consideration. Does radical Islam know its enemy? I believe that Mr Konstandaras has given witness to some truth. The, now cave-dwelling terrorists never envisioned the power of their adversary to drive fat ladies up ladders and multitudes to vote, despite their best threats and retaliations. Maybe the coalition in the war on terror is broader than they think? JEFFREY P. CLAGETT, Virginia, USA.
