HAMMARSKJOLD: UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold arrived in Athens the day before yesterday and met with Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis. Yesterday at a press conference, Mr Hammarskjold was asked whether the current situation in Cyprus was consistent with the principles and goals of the United Nations. In response he said that the secretary-general was the senior civil servant of 76 UN member states. That did not mean that he did not have personal views on various issues, but they had to be expressed in the appropriate manner and at the appropriate time. KARAMANLIS AGAINST THE FRONT: Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis made the following announcement yesterday: «The decision announced by the opposition to work with the extreme left is astounding. The parties of the center have lost their self-control and their sense of responsibility with a policy which, if there is no decisive reaction from the people, could lead us into unpleasant experiences such as those we have witnessed in the past. For the Greek people certainly remember that similar policies, tried in the Middle East, led to Greece’s post-liberation troubles.»
