OPINION

A new beginning

Let the new year become the milestone in a successful attempt to put the country back on the road to recovery following an extremely difficult 2005, during which the few notable achievements merely served to highlight how many significant changes remain to be carried out. Let 2006 be the year for a regrouping of forces and productive endeavor on the part of the political forces that bear the responsibility for national affairs in a country which, for years now, has shown itself to be incapable of reform, in a society which is crawling along in a rapidly changing international environment. Let the coming year be one which sees the birth of new political ideas and initiatives capable of producing solutions to chronic problems. These are problems that exercise negative influence on the country’s overall level of productivity and thus restrict the ability of Greeks to prosper or even to safeguard the future of their children. And finally, let us hope that 2006 will be a year that will restore the flagging morale of our weary society and give our productive citizens a new sense of belief in their capabilities for pursuing creative action for the benefit of the country as a whole.
