VLACHOU ON KARAMANLIS: (From a commentary by Eleni Vlachou): «Ever since he was a child, our current prime minister has known the meaning of certain words. He knew very well what the words sacrifice, responsibility, privation and work meant. How many other politicians, those who have arrived, those who make fun of Karamanlis, have ever been in contact with the harsh realities of Greek life? (…) The first one to be afraid of him was Spyros Markezinis. Instinct told Markezinis that Karamanlis was not just good, but the best of them all and the only person who had the strength and the ability to govern this country. That was when the war against him began, a war that began insidiously and slowly but which has now reached such a pitch of outrage and comedy that it tries to present Karamanlis as a newcomer to politics, a Kolonaki dandy, who has been imposed, as an ambitious dummy, by the powers-that-be. Who? Karamanlis, who is 100 percent Greek and an ascetic, hard-working man, is the only self-made politician we have in Greece.»
