USA AND CYPRUS: The US ambassador in Athens, Mr Cavendish Cannon, handed a statement from the State Department yesterday to Greece’s foreign minister, Mr Spyros Theotokis. According to that statement, the United States is abandoning its policy of neutrality in the Cyprus issue and expresses its sympathy and concern over the abduction and deportation by the British of Archbishop Makarios of Cyprus, which the statement stresses was carried out without the State Department’s knowledge. BRITAIN: London, 13 – A Foreign Office spokesman has made the following announcement: «Instructions have been sent to Her Majesty’s ambassador in Washington to ask for explanations from the State Department for its statements this afternoon by its ambassador in Athens to the foreign minister.» US PRESIDENT EISENHOWER: Paris, 14 – The US president, Dwight D. Eisenhower, began his press conference at the White House today by saying that the USA was ready to take all logical and practical measures to help Greece and Great Britain resolve their dispute…
