Political cynicism vs multiculturalism

Mr Papaconstantinou’s commentary «End of a myth» (May 21) fails to acknowledge that the US Senate’s decision to erect a fence on the border with Mexico is a cynical political ploy intended to whip up the forces of racism and discrimination on the right. The US Republican Party is at an all-time low in popularity (Bush has a 28 percent approval rating), and with the 2006 elections near, the Republicans are groping for any issue they can find. This explains why the Republicans are asking that the National Guard patrol the Mexican border when only last year they agreed with the president to cut thousands of border guard police from their positions. We should not confuse appeals to racism and political cynicism with the end of multiculturalism. DIMITRI ANASTASOPOULOS, Buffalo, New York.
