Discipline is needed to curb road fatalities

I was saddened but not surprised to read that two young police officers were killed on Vassileos Constantinou Street in central Athens last Thursday by a taxi driver who ran a stoplight. The combination of the blatant disregard for stoplights, stop signs and pedestrian crossings by many motorists and the complete lack of enforcement of traffic laws by the government have caused the current situation. Pedestrian and traffic accidents and fatalities are among the top public safety issues in Athens. How much more blood do we need on the streets before the government acts to protect its citizens?
