EXECUTIONS BY EOKA: Nicosia, 11 – The National Cypriot Struggle Organization (EOKA) is cleansing Cyprus of traitors. In the village of Deftera, near Nicosia, unidentified persons shot and killed a Greek Cypriot cafe owner and seriously injured another person. In the village of Inia, Paphos, the west of Cyprus, four masked men killed a Greek and injured a second man. In a village near Larnaca in southern Cyprus, a Greek was killed and two others were injured by unknown assailants. In Kythrea, eight miles northeast of Nicosia, masked men seriously injured a Greek Cypriot. In Famagusta, another Greek was killed by unknown persons. GEORG LUDWIG JOCHUM: (From a review by Minos Dounias): «The Hamburg Symphony Orchestra has given two concerts as part of the Athens Festival. Conductor Georg Ludwig Jochum fulfills his vision with unlimited freedom. The orchestra does not fail to respond to his slightest thoughts or feelings. The audience follows the flow of the performance in the same way as an exciting narration, and is carried along by one thought after another. Yet Jochum’s respect for the text is unlimited, despite the freedom of his poetic expression.»
