GEORGE V. ALLEN: New York, 22 – The new US ambassador to Greece, Mr George V. Allen, said before leaving for Athens today that he was «reservedly optimistic» regarding the chances of achieving a compromise solution to the Cyprus issue. «The conflict has created so much hostility among all the interested parties that it will be difficult to find a solution. Nevertheless, I am optimistic because I believe that the goodwill exists to remove obstacles. I believe that the USA is in a position to contribute to settling the conflict because the peoples involved are friendly to us and are fully aware of our strong interest.» DINOS ENGOLFOPOULOS: Tomorrow the world-famous Greek baritone Dinos Engolfopoulos, a star at La Scala in Milan, is to give a farewell performance with the participation of the equally famous singer at La Scala, the soprano Maria Kerestentzi-Vlastaraki. The program includes works by Verdi, Rossini, Donizetti, Bizet and Wagner. They will be accompanied on the piano by Dimitris Michailidis. STAGE PERFORMANCE: Costis Leivadeas’s Ancient Tragedy Group is to give a performance this evening in Tripoli of «Orestes» as part of celebrations to mark the anniversary of the fall of Tripoli.
