Ministry keeps mum on offer

Fortunately, the Zappas brothers, Georgios Sinas, Apostolos Arsakis and other national benefactors had a chance to bequeath wonderful buildings and useful institutions to the country. Things would be different now. At least that seems to be the conclusion drawn from the reactions to the proposal by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, which offered to donate a place to house the National Library, the National Opera and a cultural park in the Faliron Delta. Over the past two-and-a-half years, the Culture Ministry has failed to issue any response to this major offer which was made public in the press. One hopes that this silence is the result of the typical indifference and incompetence of government officials and not of interests within and outside the ministry. The government must come up with an answer – for the silence is inexplicable.
