MARIA CALLAS: The news that famous Greek singer Maria Callas [Kalogeropoulou] is to come to Greece to perform at the 1957 Athens Festival has been welcomed not only in Greece but abroad too. Callas is considered by leading European and American critics to be «the golden voice of the 20th century.» MARLON BRANDO: The Cinema Cub is to screen the Greek premiere of Joseph Mankiewicz’s «Guys and Dolls,» starring Marlon Brando, at the Asty Theater today at 11 a.m. DESTRUCTION OF FALIRON: (From «An Athenian’s Notes») «Every time I pass by Faliron and see its deserted shore, I cannot help but recall the crime committed, not only against Faliron itself but against Athenians. A beautiful beach in a lovely suburb is just 10 minutes from the city center. The city population could swim there in the summer, the lovely restaurants could be preserved, the hotels rebuilt and the coastline planted with trees. But all that is but a dream, even though it existed just a few years ago, only to be destroyed when the Faliron coastline was turned into a repository for drains. No European capital has the privilege of being built beside such a beautiful sea. We had that gift of God and we turned it into a cesspit.»
