TERRIBLE ACCUSATION: Lillian Batsi, the widow of Dimitris Batsis, the recently executed financial director of the illegal Communist Party, has claimed that the minister, Mr Rendis, promised he would save her husband «for a very high price.» «We carried out our part of the bargain. We paid with our human dignity. That was the price demanded,» she said, claiming that Mr Rendis then reneged and did not instruct his officers to testify at Batsis’s trial that he had truly repented and assisted the investigation. REPRIEVE: A special Athens court has lifted the death sentence imposed on Hector Tsironikos, who had acted as finance minister during the wartime occupation. ANDREAS M. IOSIF: This column has received the following letter from Mr Andreas M. Iosif, former minister in the Plastiras government: «Since I am the only member of the 1952 government of Nikolaos Plastiras to have resigned in protest at the execution of the Beloyiannis group, I am writing to you to correct a mistake, which is not yours but your newspaper’s.» (Ed. note: Kathimerini reported Mr Iosif’s resignation on March 29, the eve of the execution.)
