CYPRIOT STRUGGLE: Nicosia, 9 – The English-language newspaper Cyprus Times yesterday published two articles hostile to the Harding administration of the island and the British government. One of the articles was signed by the newspaper’s editor-in-chief, a British journalist, and the other by an adviser to the queen and former member of the Cypriot administration, the lawyer, Mr Chrysafinis. The British journalist called on the governor of Cyprus, Field Marshal Sir John Harding, to allow a committee consisting of Cypriots and Britons to enter the prison camps at Kokkinotrimythia, Pylas and other towns to ascertain whether Cypriot prisoners are being tortured, as has been asserted. He then charged that members of the security forces had recently broken the arms and legs of Cypriot journalist Nikos Sampson, recently arrested, and that after the discovery of the hiding place and the subsequent murder of hero Grigoris Avxentiou, 104 of his close and distant relatives had been arrested, including children aged 10 and 12. The journalist asked for Harding to be replaced and for Archbishop Makarios to be brought back to Cyprus.
