Trade union change for the 21st century

At a time of major economic and social upheaval, the role of the trade union movement is crucial and two-pronged. The General Confederation of Greek Labor (GSEE) not only has to be a channel for workers’ claims but it must also be a force in the effort to modernize the country’s economic structure. In order to achieve these aims, it must become more representative. At the moment, it is mainly staff at public corporations who are represented, rather than those who need greater protection, that is workers in the private sector. Above all, the GSEE should in future try to break clear of the purely partisan character that has distorted its mission. Serving partisan expediencies neither furthers workers’ rights nor helps the country, which needs workers that contribute toward creating its future.
