END OF MALARIA: On the occasion of tomorrow’s celebration of World Health Organization (WHO) Day, the welfare minister, Mr Zaimis, said on Athens radio that malaria had almost completely disappeared from Greece. In 1938, he said, there had been a million people suffering from the disease in Greece, whereas today there are only 100 or 200. The campaign to eradicate the disease cost an estimated 20 billion drachmas. Zaimis also said that aid to the Health Ministry from the American Mission and WHO from 1949 to the end of 1951 included the following: 940,653 meters of water pipes for 756 villages, 180 pumping stations and 29 chlorinating plants. Around 60 wells were dug. Yesterday evening, the general director of the Health Ministry, Mr T. Triantafyllou, said on the radio that many patients lived on polluted ground, stagnant water, open and polluted wells and polluted water supplies. Triantafyllou also referred to other improvements carried out to better people’s health. FRENCH WRITERS: On the occasion of the 150th year since the birth of Victor Hugo, the Gallup foundation carried out a survey for the French Institute in Athens to find out which French author was read and admired the most. A majority of 52.38 percent of Athenians questioned said they preferred the author of «Les Miserables.»
