Reflections on the union movement
The administrators of pension funds have undeniable responsibilities over any wrongdoings in the management of reserves. But responsibility is shared among all members of the board, whether they are appointed by the government or the union. In fact, the latter have an even greater share of responsibility – at least in the moral sense – because they are spending their colleagues’ money. They are the guardians of workers’ savings and they ought to report any mishandling of funds. Silence makes them accomplices to crime. But the union movement is not without responsibility in this new landscape. Sooner or later it will exclusively become responsible for the management of pension funds. And that’s the way it should be because workers should have control over their fortune. As long as the union movement proves incapable of living up to its duties, society will hesitate to entrust it with more. Recent revelations are also a mirror of the labor movement.
